Mastering Mathematics Background Questions

Overview

Is mastery a requirement of Curriculum for Excellence?

No, it is not a requirement of any of the national curricula in UK countries.

What is a requirement, however, is that pupils are expected to achieve age-related standards of attainment as far as possible. In Scotland, most pupils are expected to achieve the second level by the end of P7, although Curriculum for Excellence recognises that some pupils will achieve this earlier or later. Teaching for mastery is one approach to achieving this aim in the mathematics curriculum area and in developing numeracy across learning.
